French culture, food, language, and travel guides

If you're new to Ethnic Harvest, welcome! Our name and vision grew out of a network of ethnic churches in the Seattle area. We built this site with the hope that every foreign-born individual living in America would have an opportunity to hear the gospel from caring neighbors.

If you speak French or are ministering to people who speak French, you may also be interested in these related resources:

One way we can help our international neighbors feel welcome is to learn about their culture of origin. The food, music and language a person grows up with always has a place close to his or her heart, so learning about your new neighbor's culture is an easy (and fun!) way to honor your French friends.

Information on the French people and culture

Approximately 75 million people worldwide speak French as their native language. Besides being the official language of France, French is also the official language of Haiti and Luxembourg and more than fifteen African countries.

French is number 13 on SIL's Top 100 World Languages by Population.

The World Factbook says that 52 million people live in France, with religious affiliation as follows: Roman Catholic 90%, Protestant 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim (North African workers) 1%, unaffiliated 6%. Of the 36,664 communities in France, 34,500 have no resident evangelical witness.

According to the 1990 U.S. Census, 13 million Americans claim French ancestry and 1.9 million Americans speak French in their homes. 859,762 French tourists visited the United States in 1996.

French is the third most commonly spoken language in the United States, after English and Spanish.

Christian and Missionary Alliance has published profiles of the Francophones of Canada, and the French of Toulouse, France.
