Background Info on the Iranian People

The SIL Ethnologue reports that 68 languages are spoken among Iran's 65 million people.

Farsi (called Dari in Afghanistan) is the official language. Other languages include Azerbaijani, Baluchi, Baharlu (dialect of Azerbaijani), Kurdish and Brahui.

The World Factbook reports that Iranians are 89% Shi'a Muslim, 10% Sunni Muslim, and 1% for Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Baha'i combined.

An estimated 1-1/2 million Iranians live in the United States. The Denver area has over 7,000 Iranians, and Colorado Springs 1,000.

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship offers an online profile of Persian-speaking People Worldwide and the QashQa'i people of Iran.

Information for Churches

Perhaps you've noticed that several Iranian families have moved into your community. Your church would like to get acquainted with them and find ways to serve your new neighbors. But how can you begin?

Begin by cultivating a loving heart, a listening ear, and the habit of prayer. Look for opportunities to learn about other cultures and develop skills for cross-cultural communication. There are lots of resources on this site, including the article "How to Start a Cross-Cultural Ministry," that can help you prepare to move forward in faith.

The Jesus Film is a great way to share the gospel in the "heart language" of your Iranian neighbors. Campus Crusade for Christ has produced this beautiful film of the gospel of Luke and translated it into over 600 languages, including Farsi, Azerbaijani, Baluchi, Kurdi and Brahui. Your church can buy a video for less than $20 and sponsor a "Iranian Night" to show the film and begin a dialogue. Ask Iranian leaders in the community if they would like to see the film and if they'll help you invite other families.

God's Story is an 80-minute video which presents the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The video (and an audio version) are available in Farsi.

The Iranian Bible School provides biblical, theological, vocational, and educational training for Iranian pastors, missionaries, church planters, and other church leaders. Classes are taught in Farsi. The purpose of IBS is to equip these leaders for effective and meaningful service among Iranians worldwide.


The International School of Ministry offers affordable bible training in Farsi . Their course in structured, taught by interdenominational Christian leaders, and available on audio tapes so your church can become a training center.
